> ## Agent Instructions
> Quiver Quantitative API: base URL https://api.quiverquant.com, endpoints under /beta/. Authenticate every request with the header `Authorization: Bearer <API key>`. Keys are on https://api.quiverquant.com/dashboard/ after subscribing at https://api.quiverquant.com/pricing/.
> AI agents can use the Quiver MCP server at https://mcp.quiverquant.com/ (streamable HTTP; OAuth sign-in, or the API key as a Bearer token). Setup: https://api.quiverquant.com/docs/mcp-server.
> Each dataset needs a plan (https://api.quiverquant.com/docs/plans-and-access) and each endpoint has a per-account rate limit (https://api.quiverquant.com/docs/rate-limits).

# Quickstart

> Get a Quiver API key and make your first request for congressional trading data with cURL, Python or JavaScript.

This guide gets you from no account to your first Quiver API response. You'll fetch the most recent stock trades disclosed by members of Congress, which the Hobbyist plan and every plan above it include.

**1. Get an API key**

Choose a plan on the [pricing page](https://api.quiverquant.com/pricing/) and complete checkout. Your API key is then on your [dashboard](https://api.quiverquant.com/dashboard/), labelled **Authorization Token**.

Keep the key secret: anyone with it can use your plan. Store it in an environment variable rather than in your code.

```bash theme={null}
export QUIVER_API_KEY="your-api-key"
```

**2. Make your first request**

Send a `GET` request to `/beta/live/congresstrading` with your key in the `Authorization` header.

```bash cURL theme={null}
curl https://api.quiverquant.com/beta/live/congresstrading \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $QUIVER_API_KEY"
```

```python Python (requests) theme={null}
import os
import requests
response = requests.get(
    "https://api.quiverquant.com/beta/live/congresstrading",
    headers={"Authorization": f"Bearer {os.environ['QUIVER_API_KEY']}"},
    timeout=60,
)
response.raise_for_status()
trades = response.json()
print(trades[0])
```

```python Python (quiverquant) theme={null}
# pip install quiverquant
import os
import quiverquant
quiver = quiverquant.quiver(os.environ["QUIVER_API_KEY"])
trades = quiver.congress_trading()  # a pandas DataFrame
print(trades.head())
```

```javascript JavaScript theme={null}
const response = await fetch("https://api.quiverquant.com/beta/live/congresstrading", {
  headers: { Authorization: `Bearer ${process.env.QUIVER_API_KEY}` },
});
if (!response.ok) throw new Error(`Quiver API error: ${response.status}`);
const trades = await response.json();
console.log(trades[0]);
```

The [`quiverquant` package](https://pypi.org/project/quiverquant/) is Quiver's official Python client. It returns pandas DataFrames for the most common datasets.

**3. Read the response**

The endpoint returns a JSON array of the most recently disclosed trades, newest first: up to 500 from the House and 500 from the Senate. Each record looks like this (some fields omitted):

```json theme={null}
{
  "Representative": "Maria Elvira Salazar",
  "BioGuideID": "S000168",
  "ReportDate": "2026-11-05",
  "TransactionDate": "2026-10-23",
  "Ticker": "NVDA",
  "Transaction": "Purchase",
  "Range": "$1,001 - $15,000",
  "Amount": "1001.0",
  "House": "Representatives",
  "Party": "R"
}
```

| Field | Meaning |
| - | - |
| `ReportDate` | When the trade was disclosed. Members of Congress can disclose trades weeks after making them. |
| `TransactionDate` | When the trade was made. |
| `Range` | The value range the member disclosed. Disclosures give a range, not an exact amount. |
| `Amount` | The low end of `Range`, as a number. |
| `House` | `Representatives` or `Senate`. |
| `BioGuideID` | The member's ID in the [Congressional Biographical Directory](https://bioguide.congress.gov/). |

The [Live Congress Trading reference](/docs/api-reference/congress/live-congress-trading.md) lists every field.

**4. Filter by ticker**

Most datasets also have a per-ticker endpoint. This returns every congressional trade in Apple:

```bash cURL theme={null}
curl https://api.quiverquant.com/beta/historical/congresstrading/AAPL \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $QUIVER_API_KEY"
```

```python Python (quiverquant) theme={null}
aapl_trades = quiver.congress_trading("AAPL")
```
